From the author of the acclaimed bestseller "Holes, " winner of the Newbery Award and the National Book Award, comes a new middle-grade novel with universal appeal. Combining horror-movie suspense with the issues of friendship, bullying, and the possibility of ecological disaster, this novel will intrigue, surprise, and inspire readers and compel them to think twice about how they treat others as well as their environment.

"Be careful. Your next step may be your last."

Fifth grader Tamaya Dhilwaddi and seventh grader Marshall Walsh have been walking to and from Woodbridge Academy together since elementary school. But their routine is disrupted when bully Chad Wilson challenges Marshall to a fight. To avoid the conflict, Marshall takes a shortcut home through the off-limits woods. Tamaya reluctantly follows. They soon get lost, and they find trouble. Bigger trouble than anyone could ever have imagined.

In the days and weeks that follow, the authorities and the U.S. Senate become involved, and what they uncover might affect the future of the world.

About the author

Me thinks

YA as a genre is something that is always exciting to read because of the pure thrill it ensures in many ways. Author Louis Sachar is someone I had read before and heard a lot about. So it was a huge thrill to read Fuzzy Mud from him. For a moment I almost forgot I am not longer a teenager, only your favourite author can do that. :)

The story revolves around three main characters as outlined in the blurb with the core issue as what every teenager faces - friendship and loyalty. I really enjoyed the way the character of Chad the bully has been written about for it makes you feel for him genuinely rather than detest him for what he is.

From the first one till the last this book is one roller coaster ride with some amazing twists and turns all the way. It is a very quick and short read so to speak and is equally enjoyable for both adults and teenagers because of the issues he has spoken thereof can be some that even we face as adults.

I simply fell in love with its cover, fluoroscent green with a big black belt with caution written on it, the presentation is so eye catching that you are bound to grab this book from a bookshelf and want to read it NOW.

Highly recommended for all Louis Sachar fans, YA fans and most important people who enjoy interesting and unique reads.

Foodie Verdict

This book is like chakara pongal - sweet, delicate flavoured with some amazing after tastes!

Book Review: Desiccated Land by David Lepeska

ISBN: 978-9395481205  Genre: Non-fiction Publisher: Vishwakarma Publications  Bringing together his experiences as a journalist and a keen observer, David Lepeska writes a raw and gut-wrenching book on Kashmir. Part memoir, part travelogue, and part reportage, Desiccated Land is a page-turner.  The book starts by tracing the history of the region along with his own history, as a student who was dimly aware of the history of Kashmir and the turmoil it has been causing for centuries between India and Pakistan. Lepenska takes us to Nilamata Purana ( likely written in the 7th century ) which tells us the story leading to the birth of this region. He also shares an alternate possibility of the word being derived from a lake ‘Mira’ named after Vedic Sage Kashyapa.  His first visit to Kashmir closely followed by his second (and much longer) visit as a journalist working for the Kashmir Observer after the 9/11 attacks, make for an interesting read. Lepeska had questions, a lot of them. An

Rather than meet them head on, we circumvent them with a sigh and a consoling “never mind, yaar”. Louella is a Christian, Binaifer, a Parsi and Shalini, a Hindu. The novel’s main plotline surrounds Shalini who has fallen for an impetuous student activist, Bhagu. Where does his desire to help the less fortunate lead him? The challenges are many - Shalini’s tradition bound family, the couple’s youth and inexperience and the travails of life in Mumbai, a city the girls love but know, is fraug
