Behind the Book

Working as an assistant wedding planner at an ex-boyfriend’s wedding, Meha encounters the delectably handsome wedding photographer, Samir. Conceited and a flirt, Samir reveals that the bride happens to be his ex. But when Meha finds out that Samir is using their relationship only as experiential material for his novel, she leads him to believe that he means nothing to her. Their chapter closes.

But life has other plans for Meha. Five years later, she finds herself in an online reality show living-in with the same Samir and trying to understand the true meaning of love. Will she find the forever-wala love in a world where relationships can be as brief as the messages we send each other and where we are spoilt for choices, whether it’s the screensaver on our phone or the flavours of a condom?

An interesting take on relationships in our times, Let’s Have Coffee is funny and witty, warm and wonderfully realistic story of two very different people who fall in love.

With an eye-catching cover and a quirky blurb, author Parul Mittal manages to grab your attention in the blink of an eye. The book, Let's have Coffee is the story of two millennials Meha and Samir who are confused about everything from what to wear to what to eat to what do they want from life and relationships.

They both meet at the wedding of the exes where they both are working. Meha as the wedding planning and Samir at the wedding photographer. While you warm up to the whole basis of their first meeting, you also notice that they are attracted to each other. Making it through various ups and downs filled with misunderstandings, arguments, ego battles and most importantly confusion whether this is the  "forever wala love" they finally get their happily-ever-after in the end.

This book is a hell of a ride filled with emotions and makes you go topsy turvy trying to decipher the meaning of forever wala love with Meha. I loved her character. Completely flawed, not at all perfect and so relatable. That is how we all are. Meha is a breath of fresh air in romance novels full of picture perfect heroines. She is fat and has no qualms about it. She carries herself with so much elan and pride. I admire her confidence for it was truly inspiring how she didn't let anything deter her way of thinking. She listened to her heart and did all that made her happy. We need more heroines like this! Someone who motivates and comes across as a friend whom you aspire to be like. Coming to Samir, he comes across as someone who is confused about what he wants from life and also his relationships. But you cannot ignore the fact that he is a charmer. He charms his way into your heart and there were quite a few scenes where he made me smile.

The romance between them has been done well and their oh-so-sizzling chemistry has been captured exceptionally well. If I were to caption it as per the latest internet trends then Meha and Samir are truly #Relationshipgoals in every manner! The only drawback I had with this book was the usage of 'Hinglish'. I despise novels which use this liberally as it is a huge turn off. Moreover, I also felt that the narrative could have been tighter as I felt there were some chapters where too much was happening and some where there was too little.

All in all, this book has the making of a perfect Bollywood masala flick with all the ingredients to make it blockbuster intact. Recommended to all people who enjoy light reads , especially romance!

Foodie Verdict

This book is like the Rava Dhokla - different and delicious!

Book Review: Desiccated Land by David Lepeska

ISBN: 978-9395481205  Genre: Non-fiction Publisher: Vishwakarma Publications  Bringing together his experiences as a journalist and a keen observer, David Lepeska writes a raw and gut-wrenching book on Kashmir. Part memoir, part travelogue, and part reportage, Desiccated Land is a page-turner.  The book starts by tracing the history of the region along with his own history, as a student who was dimly aware of the history of Kashmir and the turmoil it has been causing for centuries between India and Pakistan. Lepenska takes us to Nilamata Purana ( likely written in the 7th century ) which tells us the story leading to the birth of this region. He also shares an alternate possibility of the word being derived from a lake ‘Mira’ named after Vedic Sage Kashyapa.  His first visit to Kashmir closely followed by his second (and much longer) visit as a journalist working for the Kashmir Observer after the 9/11 attacks, make for an interesting read. Lepeska had questions, a lot of them. An

Louella is a Christian, Binaifer, a Parsi and Shalini, a Hindu. The novel’s main plotline surrounds Shalini who has fallen for an impetuous student activist, Bhagu.
