SIDELINED BY MAN, ANIMALS TURNED TO DEMONS. Plundered by humans of their habitats, animals take a drastic step when they decide to send a team of a cat named as Katy and a dog named as Dug, to an invisible island known, as the Island of 'Five Hundred Graves'. The island becomes visible only for a short time on the night of the full moon. Legend has it that the island is inhabited by the demons. Katy and Dug are supposed to negotiate a deal with the demons, convincing them to allow the animals inhabit the island. Majority of the animal community believe that tinkering with the other world could bring their wrath to the animals. The team is sent to the island nevertheless. But can a deal with the dead be materialized? Are there really demons on the island? Is there any conspiracy involved? Will Katy and Dug be able to negotiate, or will survival remain their only question in the deadly island?

About the author

Deepak Kripal, 29 years, was born in Uttarakhand. He is a doctor by profession, and a writer by choice. He completed his MBBS and internship from Kanpur in 2009, and currently lives in New Delhi. He believes in dreams, and tries to live one day at a time. A known name in the blogosphere, he loves to blog. Writing a book was always in his mind. He was waiting for a story worthy of writing his first book, and as soon as that happened, the seeds of his debut novel were sown.

Me thinks

Writing a fantasy brings along tons of homework for the author and I am not saying this as an author myself but as a reviewer for fantasy is thread out of your imagination which needs to be spooled into a story which is no mean feat. In normal drama, we tend to associate habits and actions to people we see around or read about, but in this genre everything is based on the author’s imagination.

And if I had to rate this book solely on that then I would give it a 4 on 5 sheerly for the hardwork that reflects behind the entire story put together.I started the book half assuming it to be war and bloodshed but was pleasantly surprised to see it to be a mixture of many other things as well like emotions, love and most importantly survival, the love for life.

From the moment I had read the blurb of the book I knew I was in for something different and unique for it is not every day that you get to hear or read about a plot like this. The more I read the story the more intrigued I was into knowing what was going to happen next and there was not a single moment in the book wherein I felt disappointed by the author.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it out and out so much that I could visualize some of the events from the book in my mind long after I was done reading it. Such is the impact of the author’s narrative and description. Kudos to the author for managing to create this effect in his first book itself which has such a unique plot, it felt proud to see it!

One of the other reasons for the pride when I read the book was to know that the author has been a blogger and I could see so many familiar names in his acknowledgement lists that it made me smile. I admire the author's humbleness there.

Would surely recommend this book to all who don’t mind experimenting with genres, who appreciate the efforts that go behind writing fantasies and for those who truly love reading them – trust me you won’t regret it!

Foodie Verdict

This book is like kachori - tangy, tasty and tempting.

Book Review: Desiccated Land by David Lepeska

ISBN: 978-9395481205  Genre: Non-fiction Publisher: Vishwakarma Publications  Bringing together his experiences as a journalist and a keen observer, David Lepeska writes a raw and gut-wrenching book on Kashmir. Part memoir, part travelogue, and part reportage, Desiccated Land is a page-turner.  The book starts by tracing the history of the region along with his own history, as a student who was dimly aware of the history of Kashmir and the turmoil it has been causing for centuries between India and Pakistan. Lepenska takes us to Nilamata Purana ( likely written in the 7th century ) which tells us the story leading to the birth of this region. He also shares an alternate possibility of the word being derived from a lake ‘Mira’ named after Vedic Sage Kashyapa.  His first visit to Kashmir closely followed by his second (and much longer) visit as a journalist working for the Kashmir Observer after the 9/11 attacks, make for an interesting read. Lepeska had questions, a lot of them. An
