Bollywood Nation charts the evolution of Indian cinema from its mythological films in the early 20th century to its world-class gangster and terrorist melodramas of today. In doing so, the book investigates why and how our films have become so deeply embedded in the nation’s popular imagination. Is it merely that cinema is the only common form of mass national culture in a country that does not have either a common language or a common religion—or is it entwined with greater social, cultural and spiritual aspirations?
By narrating the story of India through the stories that our films tell us, Vamsee Juluri posits cinema as the voice of the nation and examines how it has shaped our understanding of our place in the world.

Me thinks
This is my first win at a Good reads Giveaway and it could not have been a better book than this for a movie buff like me. I admired the way author has taken the reader on a ride through the filmy world also known as Bollywood for many of us.
Having read a lot about the author previously this is one book I was eyeing and praying hard to win for winning has its own charm! This book is like a key to the magical world of movies that we see on the big screen. What goes behind them, the dreams, the aspirations, the hard work and ofcourse the money that is involved along with the sentiments and passion that all comes together to make one movie which is easily judged in perhaps less than three hours and tagged for a lifetime.
I always wondered how a director of a movie would feel on the release date, perhaps like a school child anxiously waiting for his results – fail or pass. And this can actually make or mar his story forever. I loved the way the author has presented a few facts of this industry without mincing with words and yet sounding polished enough for us to grasp its real meaning.
Right from Mughal-E-Azam to Dilwale Dulhaniye Le Jayenge, every movie that has made Bollywood what it is today has its share in this book making you gape in amazement at the behind the door secrets that unfold page after page.
A thoroughly enjoyable read, for all movie lovers a must read for the joy ride it promises to be.
