Behind the Book - Sanjana Chowhan

Today we are in conversation with Sanjana Chowhan. Besides broadcast, radio and digital media experience, Sanjana Chowhan has written for THE ATLANTIC, INDIA IS and QUINT. We talk to her about writing and all other things close to her heart. You can know more and read her works HERE.

1. Welcome to Reviews and Musings. Tell us something about you which is not mentioned anywhere in public domain.

I’m an extremely calm person. No one ever mentions that anywhere. And they definitely don't believe it.
2. How and when did you decide to be a writer?

I didn't wake up one day and decide I was going to do it, but I’ve always been at it. When I was 5 years old I would write stories about a character I created (and illustrated) called Action Bunny, so it’s pretty much been part of who I am.

3. Why erotica?

Because, why not?

4. From a time when Manto and Ismat Chugtai were tried for indecency to a time when erotica is thriving as a genre, do you think Indian readers have finally come of age?

Yes and no. There are those that will read erotica and laud you for the stories. Then there are those that will read erotica and delete it off their apps. But there are also those that will read erotica and give you a hard time for it. Number 3 still accounts for the majority.

5. Have you faced any untoward incident especially on social media because of your writings ? If yes, would you like to share it with us?

I’ve been trolled like no man’s business. From mindlessly being accused of ‘Teaching men how to rape and women how to be sluts’ to going after my college (Columbia Journalism school) for ‘producing alum’ as myself. Mind you, some of these people are IIM educated.

6. According to you what is that one lesson learned you would like to share with any aspiring erotica writer.

I wouldn't call it a ‘lesson’ because I always imagine that word to have a very stern, negative connotation. But I’ve learned to be a lot more fearless, even in my writing!
You can read the book HERE
7. In today's times where love and relationships are being redefined and commitment phobia affecting one and all, do you think reading erotica is an escape route for the younger generation.

Well, not with my books. How do you know my erotica doesn't talk about commitment phobia? So the escapists are going to be disappointed in me I reckon!

8.Writers whom you consider an inspiration.

Jhumpa Lahiri, Rohinton Mistry, Anuja Chauhan, Joan Didion, Katherine Boo

9. What inspires you, your stories and your writing the most?

People watching.

10. Would like to know your experience with Juggernaut as a publishing platform for all aspiring authors.

I’m still here! My editor is a wonderful woman who knows when to console me and when to crack the whip.

11. Any advice for aspiring writers.

Don’t try to be someone else, your readers can always tell.

Book Review: Palestine Wail - Poems by Yahia Lababidi

In Palestine Wail: Poems , Yahia Lababidi creates a profound and unflinching exploration of the ongoing Palestinian crisis, drawing from his own heritage and heartbreak to reflect on a political and humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded across decades. This collection, imbued with personal history, political outrage, and spiritual contemplation, serves as both a witness to injustice and a call to humanity. The work’s origins lie deeply in Lababidi’s own roots—his Palestinian grandmother, Rabiha Dajani, was forced to flee Jerusalem at gunpoint, a traumatic event that reverberates throughout Lababidi’s poetry.  As an Arab-American writer, Lababidi is uniquely positioned to speak on the intersection of identity, politics, and human rights. His poetry, both personal and political, draws a clear line between the suffering of the Palestinian people and the complicity of global powers in perpetuating that suffering. Through his words, Lababidi eloquently counters the equation that Zioni
