Me thinks
Okay let me be honest. The moment the author had announced he is trying his hand at romance I was hugely disappointed. Well here we had a perfect set up - a nice author who knew banking in and out and was churning some of the most amazing banking based thrillers till now. What on earth made him want to change his genre of all things was my reaction. When I finished the book I had all my answers. :)
I finished the book in 4 hours for I just couldn't put it down. Even the fear of a bad headache the next day and an important submission pending couldn't deter me from this one once I had started it, such is its power.
This story is about me. This story is about YOU. This story is about all those aspiring authors today in the country who dream of making it big in the literary world but don't know how to. This is a story of dreams, desires, love, lust and longing all wrapped into one.
The biggest thing about Ravi Subramanian's writing is his simple language. It is so easy to connect that after the first few pages the words automatically dissolve and all that is left with you is a nice movie playing in your mind. I could visualize every scene from this book till the very end. The climax wasn't something that I could call predictable but yes given the genre and the flow of the story it seemed like a very reasonable one to have.
The characters are very neatly etched out, so much that at many places I stopped and wondered "Hey wait.... is he talking about XYZ whom I know and not some fictitious person in his imagination?" This book is that believable.
Till date I have read and reviewed all his books, enjoyed them immensely but this one was special because it reflected what I had been feeling since last five years that I have been in the literary industry. It shows the murkiness of this industry so well but most importantly it brings out the fragility of human relationships beautifully. There is so much truth in most of all that he has written and that is what makes this book stand out.
Never have I seen this author do that in his previous books and for his first, yet such a brilliant attempt he truly deserves a hats off! Mind blowing might not be the right word to describe it too. From the plot, to the characters to the dialogues everything was just perfect served in nice small helpings not letting a reader feel overstuffed at any point of time. What I didn't like were few editing lapses but the over all charm of the story took the crown. I am still wondering how much of it is fact and how much fiction!
Overall a strongly recommended read for all aspiring authors and other people who want to be a part of this world. Not to forget those who don't want to be, for it is too close to reality to leave it like that. It can easily be called a glimpse into the literary world of India. Kudos to the author for venturing out into something so drastically different from his previous works and yet managing to do it with such an amazing perfection.
